Personal Home Page Setup Help

NorthNet is not responsible for any problems or damage resulting from the use of these instructions.

Make sure that your HTML source is relocatable. Depending on how filenames are specified, many HTML editors insert references to files on you local hard drive into the HTML source. Once the files are transferred to the server, local links become invalid.

You first need to have your personal area activated. This can be done by simply calling us or sending an email to
web@northnet.net.  We will activate your personal area right away.

After your personal area has been activated, you need to FTP to your shell account (
ftp.northnet.net) using whatever FTP client you prefer. (We recommend WS_FTP, which is located on our Netscape Installation CD-ROM in the utilities\wsftp directory, or can be downloaded from our ftp site.  The rest of the instructions will assume that's what you're using).  Use the same username and password you use for your primary electronic mail account.

Change into the
public_html directory on ftp.northnet.net. Do this either by double-clicking on public_html folder, or by selecting the public_html folder and clicking on the ChgDir button.

Transfer all of your HTML files to into the public_html directory. Find the HTML files on your local hard drive in the left-hand side Local System section. Click on the file to transfer (select multiple files by shift-clicking) and click on the right arrow between the Local System and Remote System sections. (If you have any subdirectories on your local hard drive, they need to be mirrored on the server.)

The top-level page (the real home page) needs to be called
index.html (yes, it is case sensitive). If you're coming from a Windows editor, the file is sometimes called index.htm; you can change this by using the Rename button. That's it!

Your home page will be visible as:

   http://www.northnet.net/~username/
