Windows3 Explorer Setup Help

The following instructions are based on the NorthNet provided
Internet Explorer Floppies

You WILL NEED TO KNOW THE DRIVE LETTER OF YOUR FLOPPY DRIVE to install the software.

Beginning Installation

  • From Program Manager, select File and then Run.
  • In the Run field, enter X:\setup (where X: is the letter of your floppy drive).
  • For example, if your floppy drive is the A drive you would enter:
  • a:\setup
  • Now, click the OK button.
  • Click I accept when asked to confirm the license agreement.
  • Click Ok to install Internet Explorer and then click Ok to accept the directory C:\IEXPLORE
  • Click Complete as the type of installation.
  • Click Continue to accept the Microsoft Internet Explorer program group.
  • When prompted, insert the second, third, and fourth disks and then click Ok to accept.
  • Follow the instructions to install the modem (Internet Explorer should automatically detect the modem and install the appropriate software for the modem).
  • Lastly, Click Yes when asked to restart Windows and Internet Explorer will restart your computer (be sure to remove the floppy disk from the computer).
  • NOTE:  If you are using a MS-DOS multi-boot configuration, you will need to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Move the following entries to a location just after the PATH statement at the beginning of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
  • SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\WINDOWS\IEXPLORE
    SET ieppp=C:\WINDOWS\IEXPLORE
    SET pctcp=C:\WINDOWS\IEXPLORE\pctcp.shv

Configuration:

  • After your computer has restarted, double click on the Get On The Internet icon in the Microsoft Internet Explorer program group.  This will start the Connection Wizard.
  • Click Next to continue with the Connection Wizard.
  • Select Manual as the setup type and then click Next.
  • Enter NorthNet as the name of the Service Provider and then click Next.
  • Enter the dial up number listed on your information sheet, then uncheck the Use Country and Area/City Code box.  Click Next to continue.
  • Enter your accountname and password (located on the information sheet) and then click Next.
  • On the IP Address screen My Internet Service Provider automatically assigns me one should already be selected. Click Next to continue.
  • Enter the two DNS numbers listed on the information sheet and then click Next.
  • Yes should already be selected on the Internet Mail screen. Click Next to continue.
  • Enter your username and password for Internet Mail (they are the same as entered before). Click Next to continue.
  • Enter your first and last name in the Full Name box.  Enter your email address, accountname@northnet.net, in the Email Address box.  Enter mail.northnet.net in both the Incoming Mail and Outgoing Mail server boxes. Click Next to continue.
  • Yes should already be selected on the Internet News screen. Click Next to continue.
  • Enter your first and last name in the Full Name box.  Enter your email address, username@northnet.net, in the Email Address box.  Enter your account and password for Internet News (they are the same as entered before). Enter news.northnet.net in the News server box.  Click Next to continue.
  • Click Finish to complete the configuration.

Using Internet Explorer:

    A new icon called NorthNet should appear inside the Microsoft Internet Explorer program group.  Double-clicking on this icon will bring up the Connect screen. Click Connect to dial and connect to NorthNet.  After you've connected, Microsoft Internet Explorer should automatically start.

    To access Internet Mail, double-click on the Internet Mail icon in the Microsoft Internet Explorer program group.  After you've entered your username and password, the program will start.

    NOTE:  You must click Send and Receive in order to send messages after composition and to get new messages.

    When you'd like to disconnect from NorthNet, exit any Internet programs that are running, and then locate the Connected to NorthNet icon (it should be in the lower-left corner of your screen). Double-click on the icon and the click Disconnect.  This will return you to the Connect screen. Click Close to exit.

    Several custom features are available from the Connect screen. Simply click Properties when you're at the Connect screen to display these features.
