First, you will need be sure that the Exchange program is installed. To do this, go to the Start button, then Settings, then
Control Panel. Locate and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Click on the Windows Setup
tab. Verify that the box next to Microsoft Exchange is checked (this may also be called Windows Messaging). Go ahead and check the box if it isn't (Windows95 will install the Exchange software from whatever media you installed Windows95 from. e.g. CD-ROM, hard disk, or floppy). After the program is installed, exit from the
Add/Remove Programs control panel.
The next step is to add your mailbox(es) to Exchange. Go into the Windows95 control panel (if you're not already there). Locate and double-click on the Mail and Fax
icon (it might be labeled Mail if you do not have fax services installed). Verify that one of the services available is Internet Mail.
After you've verified that you have Internet Mail click the
Show Profiles
button. This will list all of your current Exchange profiles. To start fresh, you should remove any profiles that are currently listed. To do this, simply click on the profile to be removed and then click on the
Remove button.
After you've removed all of the existing profiles, click the Add button. Now, select the Manually configure information services
option and then press the Next button. When the Exchange wizard prompts you for a Profile Name, enter your NorthNet e-mail username, then press the Next
button. Three services need to be added to this profile.
Click on the Add button, select Internet Mail, and then click on the OK button. The Internet Mail General
tab should appear. The boxes should be completed as follows:
Full Name: place you first and last name here
E-mail address: username@northnet.net (use your e-mail username)
Internet Mail server: mail.northnet.net
Account name: username
Password: password (use your e-mail password)
Now, select the Connection tab. Select Connect using the modem
(be sure you're using the NorthNet connection in the Dial using the following connection box). Lastly, place a check in the Work off-line and use Remote Mail box. Select OK to return to the Services
tab.
The second service to add is the Personal Address Book. Click on the Add button, select Personal Address Book, and then click on the OK button. In the Name
box you can either enter you name or username. The Path
box needs to contain the location and the name of your Personal Address Book file. (e.g. c:\exchange\username.pab where username is your e-mail username). After you've entered the path and filename for your Personal Address Book click on the
OK button.
The last service to add is the Personal Folder. Click on the Add button, select Personal Folders, and then click on the OK button. The Create/Open Personal Folders File
window should appear. Enter your e-mail username in the File Name box, then click on the Open button. In the Name
box you can either enter you name or username. After you've entered the name information click on the OK button.
Click on the OK button again to continue.
For the last step, verify that
Do not add Inbox to the StartUp group is checked. Click on the Next button and then the Finish button.
If you only need one mailbox, close the Mail and Fax control panel, close the Control Panel group,
and you're all done! If you have multiple mailboxes, repeat the steps outlined above to add additional mailboxes.
To use the Exchange program, locate and double-click on the Inbox
icon. Receiving e-mail is accomplished by selecting Deliver Now from the Tools menu. To send a message, select New Message from the Compose
menu. After you've finished writing the message and have sent it, be sure to select Deliver Now from the Tools menu to deliver it to the NorthNet mail server.
If you have configured Exchange for multiple
mailboxes, there is one final step required to access each mailbox. Enter the Exchange program and select Options from the Tools menu. In the section labeled When starting Microsoft Exchange check the
Prompt for a profile to be used option. The next time Exchange is run, you will be prompted as to which mailbox you would like to use.
