Internet Auto-Dial Repair Help

NorthNet is not responsible for any problems or damage resulting from the use of these instructions.

Users of Netscape Communicator dial-up software may notice that settings made in the Internet control panel don't stay saved. The two most common symptoms are the `Disconnect if idle for` box staying checked and `Connect to the Internet using a modem` radio box staying unselected.

This problem is caused by a specific library file installed by Netscape Communicator.  Please follow the instructions below to re-name this file.  After re-naming the file, the instructions describe how to correctly setup the disconnect and connection properties.

First, exit Netscape Communicator if it's running. Go to the Start button, then select Find, and then Files or Folders... The Find Files window should appear.  In the Named: field type:

   muc.dll

Now, select your (C:) in the Look in: field (use the drop-down arrow at the right, locate the drive, and select it). Next, click the Find Now button. When the search is finished there should be a listing for one file.  Click on the file once to select it. Now select Rename from the File pull-down menu. Type:

   muc.lld

And then press the Enter key on your keyboard. You can now close the Find Files window.

To re-enable auto-dial, go to the Start button, then select Settings, and then Control Panel.  Locate and double-click on the Internet Control Panel icon.  The Internet Control Panel window should appear with a number of tabs across the top.  Locate and click on the Connection tab.

If you have a newer version of the Internet Control Panel you will see a selection titled Connect to the Internet using a modem.  Make sure it's selected.  If you have an older version of the Internet Control Panel, you'll see a check box with the phrase Connect to the Internet as needed.  Make sure it's checked.

Now, close the Internet Control Panel and exit the main Control Panel window.

To disable the auto-disconnect feature, please refer to our Disabling Auto-
Disconnect
page.
