Win95/98 Dial-Up Help

There are several areas in Windows95 and Windows98 that can be tuned for optimum Internet performance.

Network Control Panel

The first area of interest is the Network control panel.  Enter this control panel by clicking on the Start button, selecting Settings, selecting Control Panel, and then double-clicking on the Network control panel.

Unless you are on a Local Area Network, the only protocol needed is TCP/IP.  If you have any other protocols (they have a small icon next to them that looks like a 'pipe') such as IPX/SPX or NetBEUI, they can be removed. Simply select the undesired protocol and click on the Remove button.

Next, verify that the TCP/IP protocol is properly configured.  Do this by selecting the TCP/IP protocol and then clicking on the Properties button.  First, check the IP Address tab. Obtain an IP address automatically should be selected. Next, click on the DNS Configuration tab and make sure that DNS is disabled.  Now, click on the Gateway tab.  Verify that no gateway is listed.

Click the OK button twice to finish. Windows may need to restart your computer to implement the changes.

Dial-Up Networking

The second area of interest is the Dial-Up Networking group.  Locate and double-click on the My Computer icon (it should be located on your desktop).  Next, locate and double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder.  Select the NorthNet connection (single-click), then select Properties from the File menu. Now, click the Server Type button or tab.

In the Advanced options section, the ONLY box that SHOULD BE checked is Enable software compression.  Uncheck any others.

In the Allowed network protocols section, the ONLY box that SHOULD BE checked is TCP/IP .  Uncheck any others.

Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.

First, make sure that Server assigned IP address is selected and that Server assigned name server addresses is also selected.  Second, make sure that both Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network are checked.

Now, click the OK button and then click the General tab.  Locate the Configure button and click it.

At the bottom of the window, you will notice a Maximum speed setting.  The speed should be set as follows:

14.4 Modem should be set at:  19200
28.8 Modem should be set at: 38400

33.6 Modem should be set at: 57600

56K  Modem should be set at: 57600 or higher

Now, click on the Connection tab.  Under the Call preferences section set the option Cancel the call if not connected within to 120 seconds.

To exit Dial-Up Networking, click on the OK button twice and then close the Dial-Up Networking window
.
